You may be have heard the latest news buzzing around the press about the transformed Bruce Jenner, now addressed as Caitlyn Jenner. DiverseModels.com shares our thoughts about the famous celebrity’s appearance as the featured model of Vanity Fair.

Society, in this day and age, is still coming to terms with social acceptance of transgender people, yet in the mainstream media the appearance of a transgender model appearing on a public billboard or walking down a fashion capital’s catwalk is an uncommon sight. You have to ask yourself why is this the case? Of course, depending on the cultures and traditions of different countries’ perspective of transgender people, the modern world we live in should have a more open attitude towards the issue of transgender shouldn’t it?

Coming to terms with being transgender is a difficult journey in itself, but what if you are a celebrity in the public’s constant eye. This was what happened to former Olympic champion, Bruce Jenner (now known as Caitlyn Jenner). Last week, Caitlyn Jenner shocked the world with her grand reveal as Vanity Fair magazine’s cover model.

Being an award-winning athlete and popular TV celebrity with his former wife and well-known children (the Kardashians; who already has an established reputation), it was a hard and long battle to come out as Caitlyn Jenner and express who true person inside. This news received major media attention, and many news sources label the celebrity as the most open and famous transgender model in the world. Caitlyn Jenner on opening her new Twitter account received one million followers within online a few hours.

During the shoot for the cover of Vanity Fair (shot by acclaimed photographer, Annie Leibovitz), the new Caitlyn Jenner admitted that it was a very emotional experience and said that “This shoot was about my life and who I am as a person. It’s not about the fanfare, it’s not about people cheering in the stadium, it’s not about going down the street and everybody giving you ‘that a boy, Bruce,’ pat on the back, O.K. This is about your life.”

When it comes to being a transgender model, you do encounter both personal and professional issues. Besides being able to come out of hiding, getting to know yourself more and expressing who you really are, the mainstream media is might find you a target to publish public stories about you as a source of controversy. This was the case with Caitlyn Jenner, on one side she endured the public scrutiny and ridicule of her coming to terms with her transition, however, on the other side of the story, the world watched her journey and it created awareness to the issues that transgender people experience day to day, and people who had previously hid the transgender identities so Caitlyn Jenner as a role model and were inspired to speak out about their own stories.

Being a transgender model is not about what society dictates and conform to looking the mainstream ideals of beauty. Moreover, it is about being yourself and enjoying it. It’s about letter yourself be who you want to be, not  giving the impression of what others want to see.
